Back in February 2016, Alan (our customer) approached us with the requirement to cover his outdoor courtyard.
Alan was looking for a canopy that could complement his building whilst incorporating the kitchen extension and be aesthetically pleasing. Alan wanted to create an outdoor living area which could be used throughout the year for entertaining and enjoying the outdoor space. Alan wanted to stay dry and protect the area from the falling leaves off the surrounding trees.
From the initial site survey, it was clear the canopy needed to be a bespoke structure to fit in with the area that needed to be covered. A curved canopy was suggested to keep the design sleek and understated whilst providing a beautiful canopy structure. Due to the size of the area, the solution needed to feature two curves. As you can see from the photos, this enhances the look of the canopy and keeps it from looking industrial or commercial.
The main issues with the design and installation were the chimney breast, the existing downpipe and getting a watertight finish with the current building. After extensive discussions with the design team, a set of drawings were drafted which would create the ideal canopy for this project. Alan chose to have the canopy powder coated to RAL colour 7016 (Anthracite Grey), although his windows and doors are golden oak and his extension has a cream render, the anthracite grey has a contemporary look which blends into the surroundings really well.
Once a manufactured date had been confirmed, the installation team arranged the groundworks in preparation for the canopy installation, which would be a week later. Due to the size and weight of the canopy, it took three separate deliveries to get the canopy to the site – it equated to 2 tonnes of steel in total, with the longest curved beam being just over 7 metres!
Once installation started, the canopy took shape quite quickly and by the second day, the majority of the structure was up and we were close to glazing. Alan loved the look and he was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the structure looked. These canopies are a real statement.
Installing the H-section around the chimney and glazing the roof the installation team were presented with a few challenges, as since the drawings had been agreed the chimney and kitchen extension had been rendered, which made a tight fit … even tighter! This is where the experience and quality of the fitters came in, they had to overcome these challenges with minimal effort, whilst ensuring the quality of the finished project.
We hope that Alan and his family enjoy their Ultimate curved canopy for many years to come. Alan has turned an outdoor space into somewhere he can use all year round.
