Mr Morris, our customer approached us back in March with a requirement for a carport canopy to go between his house and his substantial boundary wall. Mr Morris wanted to keep his sports car under cover, sheltered and protected from the elements all year round.
Mr Morris already had a detailed sketch idea of how the canopy was to be designed and located. The initial visit was to take measurements following our initial estimate and discuss Mr Morris’s requirements and expectations. Mr Morris wanted the canopy sloping towards the house, which would enable us to drain the rainwater into his existing drainage. Due to the width of his driveway he didn’t want any legs/posts, which would narrow his driveway.

The main detail and criteria on our site visit was to avoid the soil pipe, the rainwater down-pipe and the boiler flue with the canopies gutter profile. We also needed to consider a solution that would allow us to flash the canopy to his house. Also the width of the driveway narrowed slightly towards the rear of the property, so the canopy measurements were critical as it had to taper.
The first draft drawings were created and once we had positioned the brackets in the right place we focused on the aesthetics of the brackets. We wanted to incorporate a curved profile. This added strength, it complimented the curve of the canopy and softened the bracket detail (the devil is in the detail).
Mr Morris signed the final drawings off and chose the contemporary Anthracite Grey (RAL7016), which would compliment his recent extension and workshop at the bottom of his drive. Mr Morris chose Clear polycarbonate for the roof glazing, as he had 2 windows under the canopy and still wanted to ensure the maximum light transmission.
Once a manufactured/delivered date had been confirmed, the installation team arranged a suitable date for the canopy to be delivered and erected.
Installation of the canopy was relatively straightforward (apart from the torrential rain) and our main focus and time was spent making the canopy watertight to his house, cutting and manipulating the aluminium flashing we had manufactured around the various pipes. We finally sealed the wall and the flashing using foil-band. We also adapted Mr Morris’s existing down-pipe so that we could branch the canopy down-pipe into his existing drainage system.
Please pass on my thanks to Gary and Jordan. Good friendly people who know what they are doing.Mr Morris
