Koi Pond Canopy Installed in Derbyshire

Our customer approached us with a requirement for a freestanding canopy to go over his 12,000 gallons raised koi pond. Ian is a koi enthusiast and has a large range of beautiful koi. Ian was looking to cover his amazing pond to protect the koi and also a covered area where he could stand whilst feeding.

The initial visit with Ian was to discuss the exact area that he wanted to cover and the first things that were brought to our attention were the viewing windows for the Koi. Normally on a canopy of this size, there would be a need for an intermediate leg in the middle of the gutter to help support the canopy. Ian didn’t want this because it would prevent him from looking in from the side of the pond.

We had a couple of options to overcome this issue and once we had discussed this with the manufacturers, along with the structural engineers the favoured solution was to upgrade the steel legs and steel gutter beams. This allowed us to create a steel freestanding canopy which complimented the surroundings and the beautiful pond.

Ian chose to install the footing concrete pads himself to specifications. This reduced the installation costs and Ian was a very hands-on client and wanted to do whatever he could to help the project along.

Once a delivery schedule had been confirmed, the installation team contacted Ian to organise an installation date.

Our team arranged to install the canopy over a weekend as it suited all parties and could ensure Ian was there to offer a hand and be ever present as this canopy was being installed over a fully stocked Koi pond.

We faced some installation issues which were due to the sheer weight of the beams, Additionally, the proximity of the canopy to the pond meant we were unable to use lifting equipment so we resorted to old fashioned teamwork and muscle power. Even once the framework was in place it was steady progress due to working above the pond and being especially careful not for any debris go into the pond. Ian was always on hand to help out and ensure his Koi were not put at any risk.

After the first day, the framework had been erected which left glazing with 10mm multiwall Bronze polycarbonate on the second day, finishing off, levelling up, cleaning down and securing all around.

The canopy was installed in August 2016, which meant perfect fitting conditions (beautiful British sun) and allowed us to get some amazing photos and videos of the finished project. As you can see from the photos, the curve of the canopy with the dark framework really compliments and couples with the Koi pond and patio beautifully without being bulky or obtrusive.

Ian is extremely pleased with the canopy which gives him all year round protection for his Koi whilst providing a low maintenance canopy as opposed to a timber pergola, which would require regular treatment/painting.
