At Kappion, we thrive on the “difficult.” We are extremely bespoke and pride ourselves on engineering solutions that others find impossible. The challenge for this project in Kings Stanley was a large, mature tree positioned directly on the path of the proposed canopy.
The Challenge: A Tree in the Middle of a Driveway
Our customer, John, wanted to protect two cars and his driveway from the elements. However, a significant part of the available space was occupied by a beautiful old tree. Instead of seeing it as a problem, we saw it as an opportunity for a signature Kappion solution.

A Signature Solution Around a Tree
As you can see, this dark-framed, polycarbonate-roofed canopy doesn’t just work with the tree, it elegantly wraps around it. We designed and built a precise structure that fits the unique shape of the trunk.
One of the most critical aspects of this design, which you can see clearly, is that we have left ample room around the tree trunk. Why is this so crucial? The tree will always move with the wind. This simple but vital detail is very important for the long-term health of the tree and the structural integrity of the canopy. Allowing for natural movement prevents stress points and ensures the canopy lasts for decades.
Simple but Effective Bespoke Design
This canopy is substantial, with a total length of 9.8 meters, comfortably covering two cars. It’s attached to the house at the rear, bridging the gap between the building and the existing green fence. Despite its unique tree-integration, the rest of the structure maintains our signature simple, robust, and effective style. The 7016 powder coated framework provides a clean, modern aesthetic that complements the traditional stone and brick of the property.
