Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Hertfordshire, home is where the heart is—and for our client Lee, home is also where a prized motorhome deserves proper sanctuary. Yet, as is so often the case with British domestic boundaries, property lines rarely conform to strict right angles. Lee’s driveway presented a classic architectural puzzle: an awkward, non-square space flanked by an existing garden border and a timber log store. An off-the-shelf, off-the-peg shelter simply would not do; what the space required was a structure tailored with the precision of a bespoke suit.

Tailored to the Terrain
Rather than forcing a rigid, rectangular box onto an uneven landscape, our design team embraced the natural contours of the site. We engineered a tapered canopy frame that follows the precise angle of the driveway’s outer border, gliding seamlessly alongside the line of Lee’s existing log store. Covering an expansive 5.5-metre by 6.5-metre footprint, the structure maximises every available inch of ground without invading the flow of the garden.
Architectural Ingenuity: The Qcurve Inset Post
To accommodate the grand proportions of a modern motorhome, height and maneuverability were paramount. The canopy stands at a generous 3-metre clearance height at the front, allowing the vehicle to glide underneath with ease.
Crucially, the build utilises our signature Qcurve inset post style. In this configuration, the rafters and roof panels deliberately overshoot the line of the front support beam and posts. By pulling the main structural posts inward from the outer perimeter, we created vital extra clearance. This subtle shift in geometry drastically expands the turning circle at the entrance, giving Lee maximum physical room and total peace of mind when maneuvering his vehicle into place.
Finished in Anthracite & Bronze
A canopy of this scale must enhance a home’s aesthetic, not overpower it. The heavy-duty aluminum framework is finished in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, a timeless modern hue that bridges the gap between contemporary design and traditional surroundings. Glazed overhead with premium bronze polycarbonate panels, the roof filters harsh glare into a warm, diffused ambient light while offering robust protection against torrential rain, winter ice, and summer UV rays.
What began as a challenging, non-square driveway in Hertfordshire is now a masterclass in custom outdoor engineering: a sleek, functional shelter that proves with the right design, space is never an obstacle.
