Beating the Sycamore Sap: A Custom Carport Installation in Didcot

Anyone parked beneath a mature sycamore knows the frustration: heavy, sticky sap in the summer and an endless barrage of falling twigs, leaves, and helicopter seeds through autumn. For Kevin in Didcot, his car was bearing the brunt of this daily assault, turning vehicle care into a constant chore and leaving him dreading every windy night.

We stepped in to design, manufacture, and install a bespoke canopy that completely shields his vehicle and blends seamlessly into the surrounding layout.

The Challenge: Tight Boundaries and Persistent Debris

Kevin needed a robust, year-round shelter that addressed several specific site demands:

  • Relentless Tree Debris: Eliminating paint-damaging sap, bird drops, and falling branches from the overhanging sycamore.
  • Precise Footprint: Seamlessly bridging the tight clearance between the existing garage wall and a boundary conifer tree.
  • Boundary Aesthetics: Hiding an unsightly existing fence line directly behind the parking bay while adding rear wind and splash protection.

The Solution: Engineered to Fit

To maximise shelter and maintain a clean architectural aesthetic, we installed a half-curved canopy measuring 3m wide × 5.4m long × 2.1m high.

Key design and build highlights include:

  • Eaves-Overshoot Design: The half-curved roof line is engineered to overshoot the garage eaves, creating an overlapping seal that prevents rain and falling leaves from slipping between the garage wall and the canopy.
  • RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey Finish: The heavy-duty framework is powder-coated in contemporary Anthracite Grey, perfectly matching modern home finishes and resisting corrosion.
  • Bronze Polycarbonate Glazing: The roof features durable bronze-tinted polycarbonate sheets. This glazing provides UV protection, diffuses direct glare, and masks fallen leaves from below until they wash away naturally.
  • ThermoWood Rhombus Rear Infills: At the rear, horizontal spaced ThermoWood slats with a rhombus profile act as a timber screen. This feature blocks drifting debris, provides extra weather protection, and smartly disguises the rear fence line.
  • Rock-Solid Foundation: All support posts were concreted securely into the ground to deliver structural rigidity capable of handling heavy winter winds and snow loads.

Total Peace of Mind

The canopy successfully bridges the gap between Kevin’s garage and the nearby conifer, creating a sheltered bay tailored exactly to the space. Kevin no longer has to spend his weekends scrubbing baked-on sap off his paintwork or worrying about falling branches during winter gales.
