When designing a custom outdoor canopy, the ultimate achievement is harmony. A great structure shouldn’t look like an afterthought bolted onto a driveway; it should look as though it was always meant to be there. Our recent installation for Liam in Wimbledon is a textbook example of bespoke design meeting precision installation to create a flawless, highly functional extension of the home.
The Vision & Aesthetic
Liam came to us looking for a sleek, unobtrusive shelter to keep his vehicle fully protected from the elements year-round. We designed a bespoke simple half-curve canopy, tailored precisely to a 3m x 5m x 2.25m footprint—the perfect dimensions to comfortably shelter a single car while maintaining an airy, modern profile.
Finished in a timeless RAL 9005 Jet Black powder coating, the frame provides a bold architectural contrast against the property’s brickwork. For the roof, we specified crystal-clear polycarbonate panels. This setup gives Liam complete protection against rain, falling debris, and UV rays without blocking natural sunlight or darkening the driveway and adjoining house windows.
Precision Engineering & Tailored Installation
What sets this project apart is the custom engineering required to integrate the canopy so cleanly into the existing space:
- Clever Post Configuration: To maximise drivable space and clean lines, the inner side utilises short cranked wall-attached posts mounted securely to the main wall. The outer span is anchored by 3 posts set into the ground.
- Expert Groundwork Integration: Rather than cutting corners or disrupting the overall aesthetic of the driveway, our team carefully worked around the existing flagstones. The original paving was cut and refitted so tightly around the posts that the canopy literally looks like it grew right out of the ground.
- The Ultimate Seal: Weatherproofing is all in the details. Where the roof frame meets the house and garage brickwork, we dressed and sealed the join with traditional lead flashing. This creates a continuous, completely watertight seal against driving rain, ensuring zero runoff between the house and the canopy.
The Result
The finished canopy is robust, elegant, and perfectly proportioned for Liam’s property. Between the Jet Black frame, pristine clear roof, and neat stone finishing, it stands as a brilliant showcase of what tailored design and careful craftsmanship can achieve.
