Back in December, we had the pleasure of installing one of our robust, modern canopies for Alan in Coventry. The structure provided immediate overhead cover for his vehicle, but as the winter winds set in, Alan realized he needed a little more.
He wanted extra protection from driving wind and rain, but he also wanted to elevate the overall look of the driveway. He was looking for something stylish, contemporary, and warm to contrast with the cool grey of the canopy frame.
The solution? A stunning retrofit using our premium Rhombus Thermo Wood infills.
Looking at the finished pictures, the reaction is simple: Wow, doesn’t it look better?
The Thermo Wood Advantage
Alan opted for Rhombus thermo wood panels, and for good reason. This isn’t standard timber. The heat-treatment process gives the wood exceptional durability and stability, making it perfect for outdoor use.
Aesthetically, it’s a game-changer. As you can see in the photos, the wood has a consistent, rich dark brown colour throughout, offering the luxurious appearance of tropical hardwood without the environmental cost.
It also offers flexibility for the future. While it looks stunning in its current rich tone, if left untreated, thermo wood naturally weathers over time to an attractive, sophisticated silver-grey patina.
Engineering Style and Substance
This project wasn’t just about looks; it had to be structurally sound. We installed the timber across a wide 2.8-metre span at the side of the carport.
To ensure longevity and prevent warping over such a distance, we utilised perfectly spaced vertical timber supports. These hold the horizontal Rhombus slats correctly aligned, ensuring the screen remains dead straight while effectively blocking driving weather.
The Beauty of a Retrofit
This project highlights a key advantage of our canopy systems: flexibility.
You don’t have to decide on every single feature on day one. Alan lived with the initial structure for a few months before deciding an upgrade was necessary. We were easily able to return and retrofit these panels, completely transforming the space from a simple functional shelter into a striking architectural feature.
We are thrilled with the final result, and more importantly, so is Alan. His driveway is now better protected and looks fantastic.
