Welcome back to the Kappion blog! We are thrilled to share the details of a truly seamless installation we recently completed for our client, Nigel, in the heart of Derby.
Nigel had a common problem: a valuable but exposed side passage and driveway area that wasn’t fulfilling its potential. He wanted a contemporary solution to cover his outdoor living space and provide covert, secure storage for his car. We knew our versatile Euro Port canopy was the perfect starting point, but a standard installation wasn’t going to cut it. This needed to be a custom-engineered masterpiece.
The Vision: Integration, Not Just Installation
From the first design meeting, the goal was clear: this canopy should not just look like it was added on; it should look as though it had grown there. We selected a striking 9005 Jet Black powder-coated frame, paired with opal polycarbonate sheeting for the roof. This combination provides a sleek, modern look, and the opal panels filter sunlight beautifully, creating a soft, inviting atmosphere rather than a harsh glare. For a finished, clean aesthetic, we included a contemporary single skin fascia across the front and rear.
Engineering Details: The Kappion Difference
The real magic of this Derby installation lies in the execution of the details. The structure is securely bolted to the existing brickwork of the main house on one side, ensuring stability and weather tightness. For the other side, we installed two robust posts directly into the terrain, minimising ground disruption and maintaining a clean visual profile.
But the real engineering solutions were in the tricky bits:
- The Cantilevered Eaves Overhang: At the rear of the canopy, we designed a small cantilevered section that overshoots the property’s existing eaves. This ingenious touch provides extra weather protection and makes the entire structure feel incredibly well-integrated with the original house architecture.
- The Cranked Downpipe: This is where meticulous planning really shows. We had to navigate the corner where the post meets the garage. Our engineers masterfully cranked the downpipe to fit snugly around the support post. This allows it to sit subtly and functionally underneath the corner of the garage, keeping water management entirely concealed from direct view.
A Dual-Purpose Sanctuary
The final result is a beautiful, light, and airy space that serves two distinct functions. It has become a truly liveable outdoor area, perfect for a quiet coffee, protecting a bicycle, or simply keeping the elements at bay when moving between the house and the garden.
And the covert car storage? Thanks to the canopy’s precise placement, Nigel can now discreetly tuck his car away behind his existing wooden gates. This provides the secure, covered storage he needed without altering the traditional look of his property from the front.
