Built to Last: Our Latest Smart H-Curved Carport Installation in Coventry

We’ve just put the finishing touches on a stunning new project in Coventry this week. It’s a smart, H-curved single-car carport that perfectly blends industrial strength with architectural elegance.

While the finished product looks effortless, the engineering behind it is substantial. This isn’t a flat-pack kit; it is a bespoke steel construction designed to stand for generations.

The Process: Engineering, Not Just Assembly

We don’t just “put up” carports; we engineer them. Our process ensures that every structure is tailored to the specific environment it inhabits.

  1. Design & Calculation: We start with the preferred style—in this case, the H-curved design. We then run rigorous structural calculations to ensure the frame can handle snow, wind, and moment loading.
  2. Fabrication: We cut, drill, and weld the steel in-house.
  3. The Trial Build: Before anything leaves the workshop, we perform a trial build. This ensures perfect fitment before the coating process begins.
  4. The “Duplex” Coat: This is the secret to longevity. First, the construction is hot-dip galvanised to prevent rust. Then, it is finished with a fine texture matchbox powder coat.

This “Duplex” coating system allows the structure to last up to 70 years. It is a considerable structure designed to last a lifetime.

Busting the “Marketing Fluff”: Steel vs. Aluminum & Polycarbonate Myths

In the carport industry, there is a lot of noise. Many competitors promote features that sound impressive but are actually just “marketing fluff.” We wanted to take a moment to squash two of the biggest myths we hear.

Myth #1: “Structural Aluminum is stronger than Steel”

This is a common sales pitch, but it ignores the physics of construction. While structural aluminum is strong and won’t break, it is not ideal for a carport roof.

The Reality:

  • Stiffness is King: In a roof structure, you need stiffness, not just raw tensile strength. Aluminum is susceptible to vibration and movement; it simply isn’t stiff.
  • The Steel Advantage: Steel is roughly 3 times stiffer than aluminum.
  • Why it Matters: A steel frame remains rigid in high winds and heavy snow loads. It doesn’t flex, vibrate, or rattle the way aluminum structures can.

Myth #2: “16mm Polycarbonate is better than 10mm”

You will often hear that a thicker roof sheet (16mm) is superior to a standard 10mm sheet. For a carport, this is misleading.

The Reality:

  • Thermal Conductivity is Irrelevant: The main advantage of 16mm polycarbonate is better thermal insulation (keeping heat in). However, a carport is an open-sided structure. The temperature underneath is the same as the temperature outside. Paying for thermal insulation on an open canopy is useless.
  • Structural Integrity: The polycarbonate shouldn’t be holding the roof up—the frame should. While you might need thicker plastic to support a flimsy aluminum frame, our steel construction “holds its own.”
  • Strength: Polycarbonate is already 250 times stronger than glass. Our 10mm Bronze structured polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable and perfectly sufficient when supported by a proper steel frame.

The Verdict

This week’s installation in Coventry features a roof glazed in Bronze structured polycarbonate, supported by a rigid, galvanized steel frame. It is built to handle the British weather without vibration, movement, or corrosion.

When you choose steel, you aren’t paying for marketing myths; you are paying for physics, engineering, and longevity.
