We are thrilled to showcase one of our recent installations completed in Irvine, North Ayrshire. This project presented some unique challenges, but it was the perfect opportunity for our “Kilted Kite” canopy design to shine.
This impressive structure is designed to span across two separate driveways, providing extensive coverage while maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic that complements the existing properties.
The Challenge: Non-Parallel Properties
Every site is different, and this one threw us a curveball: the two properties it connects to are not parallel to each other. A standard, rectangular canopy simply wouldn’t work here if we wanted to guarantee full protection from the Scottish elements.
The Solution: A “Gull-Winged” Design
To overcome the irregular angles between the houses, we engineered a custom “gull-winged” design for the Kilted Kite. By flaring the canopy outwards, we ensured maximum coverage for both vehicles, regardless of the narrowing angles between the walls.
The structure utilises a stunning cantilever effect. The main beams run along the walls of both properties, securely attached to the structure with Hilti anchors. Despite the massive span across two drives, the entire canopy is supported by just three posts, keeping the driveway footprint minimal and open.
Key Features and Technical Specs
We worked closely with the site constraints to deliver a seamless finish:
- Streamlined Drainage: The design features a single central gutter connecting the two sections, leading to just one downpipe outlet for a clean look.
- Tapered Roofing: The durable polycarbonate roofing material was expertly tapered to match the existing rooflines of the houses.
- Weatherproof Seal: We used Kappions aluminium sealing trim to seal the canopy against the property walls, ensuring a watertight finish that prevents drips down the house facade.
A Solid Foundation and a Strong Partnership
A structure of this size requires a rock-solid foundation. We have to give a massive shout-out to our client on this project—a prominent building contractor based in Irvine/North Ayrshire. They prepared the groundwork perfectly, producing robust concrete piers for our posts to sit on, allowing us to anchor down and secure the canopy securely.
